How To Paint Furniture

1. Step One How To Paint Furniture

Treat unpainted furniture first - if the surface has not previously been painted, check whether it has any knots. If so, carefully apply a knotting solution and allow to dry. Brush on a coat of primer, and allow to dry.

2. Step Two How To Paint Furniture

Paint the top coat. Use a brush to apply a coat of water-based acrylic paint, working in the same direction as the grain of the wood. When dry, apply a second coat.

3. Step Three How To Paint Furniture

Check that the furniture is dry before replacing knobs, handles or drawers.

4. Tips And Advice

  • If the surface is already painted remove any old or flaking paint by scraping or sanding carefully with a fine sandpaper, then wash the surface thoroughly to make sure it is totally clean, before applying one or preferably two coats of acrylic water-based paint for wood.
  • After painting with water-based paints, simply rinse brushes thoroughly with warm water and soap. No white spirit is necessary, so it’s definitely gentler on the skin.
  • The colour finish of quality paints lasts longer. Make sure you buy the best you can afford.
  • Water-based acrylic paints dry quicker and have less odour than solvent-based paints.
